Channel incision and water-table drawdown sever riparian woodland from the groundwater it depends on. Those corridors dry, stop functioning as firebreaks, and the fuel becomes continuous across catchments that were previously compartmented.

This is the mechanism nobody measures. No European instrument tracks the length of riparian forest disconnected from its water table, so the flux term sits at null in our own compartment table and is rendered as not measured rather than as zero. It is also the least reversible of the three: decoupling by bed incision is geomorphological, and no species substitution restores contact with a water table that has dropped below rooting depth. The second-order effect is the one that matters for fire. Riparian corridors interrupt fuel continuity; when they dry, the connectivity gain amplifies burnt area superlinearly. That coupling is absent from the crossing projections, which is why those dates are upper bounds.
