The v3.2 stress index is a six-axis composite of energy and food exposure, geopolitical pressure, fiscal headroom, demography and supply concentration, normalised to a 0–1 scale.
Mali imports all of its fuel overland through neighbouring countries, leaving it acutely exposed to regional instability. A landlocked Sahel state, it faces a long-running jihadist insurgency, political upheaval and recurrent drought that together strain food and energy security. Gold is its principal export.
Mali faces severe Sahel drought, dependent on the Niger River and its inland delta.
