Monitoring density is not uniform. Mountain aquifers are small, heterogeneous and thinly instrumented — we are least able to observe the compartment that drains fastest. The counts below are measured, not asserted.

Each dot is one piezometer. The Gironde alone holds more of them than the nine principal Alpine and Pyrenean departments combined — 206 against 162. Savoie has four. The empty ground in the south-east and along the Pyrenees is not an absence of aquifers; it is an absence of measurement.
