Bahrain is a small Gulf economy with modest oil output and a significant aluminium-smelting and refining sector. Its gas is consumed domestically. With virtually no agriculture and acute water scarcity, it imports nearly all of its food.
Bahrain's natural springs have dried, and it now depends almost entirely on desalination.
